Varnum Vintners is owned and operated by Taralyn and Cyler Varnum. Our passion is to make delicious, small production wines that have a clear expression of vineyard and vintage. We make the wines we love and experiment with new grapes and styles that peak our interest. Our focus is on old vine Riesling, Pinot Noir and Sparkling Wines. Our hope is to share these wines with people who share our love of wine and the experience of wine country.
After years of searching, we found the perfect property for us in the Eola Amity Hills. The combination of elevation, aspect, soil, and original 1978 plantings had us at first sight. This historic vineyard had been out of cultivation for 10 years and as we bring it back to life we renamed it to the Catalyst Vineyard. Catalyst sits at 720-780ft in elevation, East facing, and on ancient volcanic clay. The soils are as shallow as 2.5ft deep in some places, where the ground goes to fairly solid sand stone or ancient marine sediment. As we bring our estate vineyard back to life, we look forward to sharing our viticultural journey and small estate wines with you.
We have been very focused in aligning ourselves with great growers around the Willamette Valley. Since we began we have sought out old vines and passionate farmers. Over the last several years we have gained deeper understandings for these sites and continued to improve the craft of the wines.
